“Summer afternoon…the two most beautiful words in the English language.” Henry James was obviously experiencing a fine summer day when writing these words. Had he been in Snowmass, he may have gone on to mention majestic snow-capped peaks, crystal blue skies and verdant pine forests.
There are many ways to enjoy a summer afternoon (or morning) in Snowmass. With low humidity, mild temps and 300 days of sunshine a year, Snowmass is the perfect summer getaway to enjoy the amazing outdoors.
Here are some favorite ways to embrace the mountains in the warmer months.
Snowmass Bike Park: Incredible downhill mountain biking trails are easily accessed from the Elk Camp Gondola and Elk Camp Lift. Choose from 4 Gravity Logic designed freestyle trails for a range of abilities. Vapor, Verde and the granddaddy of them all, Valhalla, offer intermediate to advanced table top jumps, huge berms, technical bridges and wall rides. Easy Rider is a blue run that provides a variety of terrain, allowing riders to challenge themselves without committing to extreme technical features. All trails run through extraordinary open meadows and stately pine forests.
Snowmass Gondola Rides: The best way to see the mountain is to gain some elevation. The Elk Camp Gondola at 9,805 feet and Elk Camp Chairlift at 11,325 will whisk you to gorgeous spruce and fir forests, with a view of the entire valley. Hiking, mountain biking and gourmet dining await you in one of the prettiest places on earth. ACES naturalist hikes, a climbing wall, Eurobungy and paintball will keep you and your children entertained. The Elk Camp Restaurant features local organic fare, with stations for rotisserie, panini and deserts.
Hiking: If you want to keep your summer day simple, take a hike in the Snowmass high country. Surrounded by 2.3 million acres of White River National Forest, the trail options in and around Snowmass are essentially limitless. Trails range from short flat hikes to multi-day backpacking trips. With 77 miles of trails in Snowmass you have your choice from beginner (Ditch Trail), intermediate (Rim Trail) or strenuous (Anaerobic Nightmare) trails. P.S. If you haven’t seen lovely wildflowers carpeting an open alpine meadow, you’re in for a treat with Snowmass trails.
Snowmass Rec Center: If it’s time to take a break from mountain activities, there’s no better place to while away a summer day than at the 18,000 square foot Snowmass Rec Center. Unique year-round saline outdoor pools boost the fun factor with a slide, waterfall and large Jacuzzi. A state-of-the-art cardio and weight room, indoor gymnasium, aerobics classes, climbing wall, bouldering cave, tennis courts and outdoor skate park offer something for everyone.
If the mountains are calling you this summer, Snowmass is the perfect choice for a fun, relaxing and easy vacation with plenty of activities for everyone.
